MONGOLIAN PROTECTED AREAS

We are happy to cooperate with the National Mongolian Protected Areas Agency, that manages projects for the conservation and protection of the great Nature throughout the country. Mongolia is a large landlocked country covering an area of 1.5 million square kilometers, ranked at the eighth largest country in Asia and the second largest landlocked country after Kazakhstan. Mongolia has being a country where many species of animals, and unique ecosystems strive, takes a special attention to protecting its territory. It is the role of the State to preserve, study, recognize and explore its natural environment for its unique natural formations, endangered flora and fauna, historical and cultural monuments and scenic spots are truly fantastic. Today, up to 106 identified key locations and lands for a total of 21.9 million hectares or 14.0 percent of the total territory of Mongolia are covered under the network of the state special protected areas status. Mongolian protected areas are divided into the following four types (visible on the map above):

1. The “Strictly protected area” covers 32 zones with a total of 10.9 million hectares, which is about 7.0% of the total area of Mongolia.

2. The “National parks” covering 18 areas and 8.9 million hectares, that are 5.7% of the total territory of Mongolia.

3. The “Nature Reserves”, equivalent to 32% of Mongolia's 2.0 million hectares, or 1.3% of the country's total land surface.

4. The “Natural monuments” with 24 zones and a total of 0.08 million hectares, that is 0.05% of the country’s size.
